Silver rod for 20M
A bit of time on my hands and an old silver rod down the end of the garden buried behind the greenhouse, Hmmmm
Lets make a 20M vertical. So I ripped out the coil and soldered a piece of wire in place, Drooped the length to 16.5FT with three 16.5FT long think wires buried under the lawn and I got a decent SWR, Needs a bit more fiddling with but it's under 2.0 at the moment. It seems to be working better than my horizontal dipole so far. Happy days

Nice, but with 3 buried radials ground loss is huge.

Re: Silver rod for 20M
Im going to add some more when I can be arsed, Managed to get the SWR down to about 1.3 across 20M and added an RF choke. Happy days

Re: Silver rod for 20M
No particular loss at all with the buried 'radials'. There's no need for them to be an exact length because the capacitance and conductivity to the soil will stop resonance but any length(s) like that will assist RF grounding.
Adding several more will definitely help. The NDB 327kHz transmitter I worked on had abt 20 heavy stranded bare copper wires radially out from the T-antenna's base, buried just under the surface of the field. The T-ant was not particularly large. Biggest problem was stopping folks parking under it.

Re: Silver rod for 20M
So what is radiation resistance with three buried radials on 20m?

Re: Silver rod for 20M
So I added another buried radial, Thats it now I have run out of wire and it's too damn hot to go digging the lawn to bury cables. Got my SWR down a bit more and a few nice contacts. That will do

Re: Silver rod for 20M
I would suggest to run 3-4 elevated radials instead. Just high enough so that they do not interfere with walking.
Ground - I would go for 16
