I want a sawtooth/ramp generator to go into ext mod of a sig-gen for narrow frequency sweeps. Only a couple of hours to build one but I've been hanging my nose over a few function generators on the sites. Nice but big old and heavy. Then I saw the really small modern DDS ones. Shall I shan't I?
Then a lightbulb moment. These things could double as a tone generator for my Trio TR-7500 and the recently ressurected FT-290R. You really need one with at least 0·1Hz resolution which rules out a lot of them out. There's a connector in the 290 for the option board with three wires tone, supply and ground - the radio even offers a power supply. One of these

or similar. Then you pick your seller, price and feedback rating...
[Edit - this one doesn't seem to do frequency counting - none of them do. There's a mistake in the title]
