Yaesu FT-991A wide-band VHF UHF mod

FT-991A wide-band VHF UHF mod

This forum has helped me on occasion with info like this.

According to Yaesu on the phone there is a multi-fingered button press mod on the FT-991A which enables a permanent wideband coverage on V/UHF - not the one which uses service-mode.

Yaesu said this other finger mod was dangerous. I went back talking abt low pass filters and hitting them but no, not at all.

If, after doing that finger mod, you need to reset the radio for a firmware update or other reason, after resetting it will revert to Japanese mode, giving 50 Watts.

Yaesu themselves have not been able to recover a radio from this situation, except by replacing a 'control board'. So yes however it's done - I don't know how - it is apparently dangerous!

It's awful how a hobby about experimentation and exploring the ability to modify radios is hampered by restrictions of region-locks, if it is just a software restriction, it should give us the ability to remove this restriction & additionally if there are hardware constraints they should provide instructions on how we can change it at our own risk.
