Which Digital voice mode is more common ?

I am about to up grade my mobile set up from a Baofeng UV5R mainly as I struggle to see the display whilst driving ( need glasses for close but then it blurs the distance ) and the old displays contrast is poor but also the memory amount is limited. Then I thought how about having a go at DMR at the same time ! I must admit I've never been keen on the idea but if I don't try it I cannot comment ! Worst case scenario is it only gets used on standard FM ! There are a number of interconnected repeaters in my area so why not. I am keen to use radio only rather than a hotspot but is DMR the best way to go of the digital voice modes ?
