BAOFENG GT-5R

I've taken delivery of this nifty little HT and I am impressed with it, for the very low cost. It is 'unlocked', but I guess a factory reset would put it back to stock.

I'd like to use a PC to get to the extra features (well, one that I know of, least ways: Channel Name Tags), but the only cables that I can see are for the UV-5R. Does any know for sure if said USB cable is the same one for my GT-5R, please?

Fairly confident a cable for a BAOFENG GT-3TP or 5TP like THIS ONE does the job. Whether its a genuine FTDI chip on the cable or not, I can't say but usually don't have any issues.

Looking at the CHIRP website I see:

• GT-5 (use UV-82)

So I guess that that means all of the GT-5 models use the same firmware as the UV-82, which would suggest that the USB cable for a UV-82 will work with any of the GT-5 HTs.

I'll get one of those and give it a go.

Just a quick update, for the sake of putting this to bed, so to speak: the programming cable that is linked here (thank you, Stronty) works just fine with my GT-5R. The CHIRP software is (for those who don't know) very easy to both install and use. Note: I am (for the most part) a Linux user, so if you use a different computer OS, you may have a different experience to one I've had. Also, it helps if you do in fact know how to operate a computer, rather than simply knowing how to push the keyboard buttons; I don't mean to come across as derogatory, it's just that I know that computers are, for many, simply treated as an appliance, which is fine, until it does not do what you expected it to do, then you're stuck.

I may try and use CHIRP on my Windows 10 based Netbook, but right now, I see no reason for doing that.

I noticed that when I d/loaded the .whl file, that it's date stamped 2026-08-07 02:21, so it's as fresh as the morning dew! Not sure what was updated, as there doesn't seem to be a change log, but I can tell you that the GT-5R is a listed device, so no need to 2nd guess about which profile to use.

No worries; I like to be as complete as I can be, so that anyone who is following and has the same kind of questions as I've had, can get the full picture.

RE: Changlog. My bad; I should have looked a little harder, clearly.

I love that it's written in Python. As I'm a Python dev, I may even have a study of the code and see what I can learn.
