The Ares 2 is a good set I got one from AliExpress for £130 shipped and it came with a programming cable too..
I have the crt millennium in the car and it is small enough to get into the would be ashtray. It's received audio is good

Did you try a antenna in the attic or in the house? Not ideal mind you.
Is there much gain on those t2lt ?

I think I will get it when circumstances are favourable. It would be for DX with the T2LT.

I know that several companies (or heads of the Shenzhen hydra) have used the same casing. The Thunderpole T600 is another example. In the on air tests the PNI seems to beat the Thunderpole.

It's a bungalow attic with umpteen gable ends and roofs along the street, in the direction of my nearest breakers so an attic antenna wouldn't get anywhere. It's a rural area so CB users tend to be far away.

They're effectively a dipole so I think similar gain, People have worked Europe and the USA on them on SSB though.

I set it up on the bike repair stand in the sticks about 4 miles from the edge of the nearest city, on a low hill. I managed contacts at 5 and 8 miles, around S5 R3 to them. Strangely, the 8 mile station heard me better. I was using the Thunderpole TX handheld.

We changed from UK 40 to EU FM 40 and my audio to the five mile station went up to R4. Anyway, that's my current results with my set up.

It was tested on the T1 YouTube channel with a big Sirio and compared very well against it.

I shall probably end up with the Ares and a small mobile rig with a bigger mobile antenna. I'm thinking of building a delta loop to see if it does better than the T2LT.

To get back to the thread title, it was the audio quality that drew me to the 881 and believe me, I'm tempted to get it.

Your thunder pole tx is a good set and I can imagine with the NRC switched on for TX and RX would help with long distance contacts.
When I bought my crt the pni wasn't in the shops at the time but I do like the way the buttons light up on the thunderpole version.
Good luck with saving up, I personally would probably start with the cheapest stuff on your list.

Wise words, LD. I could, of course, just buy the car kit for the TX handheld but I WANT MORE RADIO, DAMMIT! 😆
