Re: Your first CB radio ?
My First CB was in1979 a Midland 4001 AM 40 channel. Along with a DV27 in the loft on a biscuit tin sat ontop of wire coat hangers all strewn across the loft but all touching each other.
It worked great.
Everyone back then was friendly it was great.

So the DV27 predated legal CB. You learn something new each dayDX-Digger wrote: 06 Jan 2026, 03:12 My First CB was in1979 a Midland 4001 AM 40 channel. Along with a DV27 in the loft on a biscuit tin sat ontop of wire coat hangers all strewn across the loft but all touching each other.

The Economy model ? I had one of those. A lot of folk knocked them for not having a signal meter. But they got many a breaker on the air

It was just abt the only antenna / mobile antenna right at the beginning.Buick Mackane wrote: 06 Jan 2026, 12:08 So the DV27 predated legal CB. You learn something new each day![]()
In 1979 My TS185ER stopped because there wasn't any oil in the tank. I got a message to dad and waited abt 1½ hours for him to bring me some. In that time by the main road I counted the twigs on the cars. I can't remember the proportion now but it might have been abt one in five or so had a DV. I was amazed.
(the bike restarted and was fine afterward)

Nah, think it was called a 2740, had signal meter and two little chrome flick switches. The economy model came out a little bit later.Buick Mackane wrote: 06 Jan 2026, 12:46The Economy model ? Over a few year period back in the day l'd bought and used almost every legal 40FM set brought out, Unidens, Audiolines, Commtrons, Maxcoms, Rotels, Binatones, Yorks, Harriers, Midlands, Havards, Fidelity's, Manor Kestrel types, Murphy, Shogun, JWL, Icom, Amstrads, Mustangs, Lake types, Cybernets. One l didn't get to own until many years later was a Magpie Autoscan.

Re: Your first CB radio ?
My LCL 2740FM. This one was a basket case with parts robbed and no knobs. Among other parts it needed was a signal meter originally from a Harrier CBX and an MC145106P loop chip, the original intermittently shifted channel on its own. Probably why it was originally scrapped. That loop chip is straight-binary programmed making shifting out of band a doddle. These had stupendous RF gain and is probably why they were bleed-over boxes. I've reduced the RF amp's gain and still use it on local. The tuning knob was made from a scrap piece of 1950s/60s test gear.
The tree was part of my next project; the Binatone Route 66. Another robbed basket case which didn't have a tuning knob. These radios are OK but even on max deviation setting they're still too quiet for most listeners' tastes. The answer is to bugger about with the audio AGC circuit, calming it down. The tuning knob was made on a lathe and a milling machine using a domed cutter, out of... yes you guessed it... a pruning offcut from the tree.

Those were branded as ''DNT'' here. I had the homebase version. The model number escapes me. It was a very compact homebase radio14CS06 wrote: 06 Jan 2026, 15:40Hello

There's a photo and specs of a DX27 on Rigpix. Worked well on a sweet tin and a few lengths of tin foil.Buick Mackane wrote: 06 Jan 2026, 14:08No longer made i believe but there is subpar copies kicking around.
