11 Meter band Antenna & setup

Post by INTERCEPTOR »

Right I need a Antenna for 11 Meter band Sideband. I have read the numerous threads on this and..... {bnghd}

I am confused...from what I read the T2LT antenna performs very well and seems to be reccomended.

So I think that maybe the way to go unless advised otherwise? Does the homebrew Gainmaster (HORIZONTAL) or a Di-Pole perform better, calculated/measured performance gains?

I will probably want to mount it horizonal as I want max gains for DX and lower QRM.

If I mount a T2LT horizontal, how directional will it be? Does it need to be mounted in direction for optimum performance?

If mounted sloped or V how does this perform? Directional? Better radiation pattern? Angles?

Basically I will want to mount it really high set it and leave it. If it can be sloped with no adverse affects I will slope it, if not I will mount it perfectly horizontal, between masts.

For connecting the Antenna to the Radio, can I link serveral lengths of coax using conectors, does it need to be measured lengths?

Let me know what you think, I know this is subect is beat out daily but I don't fully understand the theory so just would like the advice for DX antenna setup, hence why I believe horizontal would be best?

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

i'd probably just go for a pair of inverted V's one north/south other east/west from the same feed, one cut at say 27mhz other say 27.5mhz with a balun/choke for luck..

you could make a coaxial bazooza, good SWR but mine seems quiet,
gainmaster flat side, not sure if you can, although they are a centre-fed dipole they're not a simple up and down wire inside.

coax can be as long as you want, it's only a feeder, if you do get SWR change from changing coax length then it's acting as part of the antenna some how,

...A pair of V's, does that mean two seperate Inverted V Dipoles which I switch between for N/S or E/W?

Or two dipoles as one connected to a feed? so 4 elements of 8.07 feet? Two elements off centre and two off the outer feed coax....

I have been thinking about coax based antennas today I have looked through my coax collection and have a few lengths of coax, a couple of 16ft lengths & one 8ft+ length, I think it is RG213/U. It is thick.

I like the sound of homebrew Gainmasters but not sure if this type of coax is suitable.

Ref Gainmaster flatside, I will post on the Gainmaster thread I read something but I don't understand so your opinion would be welcomed.

From what I have read on another thread...
northern35s wrote:if you were to operate just around 27Mhz then 5 turns of RG58 on a 4.25" former or slightly broader band is 5 turns of RG213 on the same former is about as good as it getsHTH :)
So do you think 5 turns of my RG213 on a 4.25 inch former should be suffient as a choke/balun?

I was hoping to do some work today outside to my current setup as it is awful, but it has been blowing 50MPH winds all day....and feels really cold {bnghd} Hopefully we will get a nice day soon and I can sort my antenna and have a working setup again

Thanks for your help.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331171925288? ... EBIDX%3AIT

I'm investing in one of these (if £46 counts as an investment)
The gainmaster is great at 10 & 11 meters but I want to start on the 15, 17, 20 and 40 meter bands so I'll put this up and if it compares well on 10 & 11 meters as well, the GM will go.

I can only speak from experience but my HF antenna does not even come close to the Gainmaster on 10,12 and probably 15 too

On EBay you can get a T2LT kit for about £10. I have seen dipole's on there too....

I have not tried one but they seem to get good reviews.......I saw a test online by one of the forum users where he mounted it Vertical, Horizontal and Inverted V......................

I have knocked up a Homebrew gainmaster on Monday............using some old coax and a bit of wire.....I had it laying on a fence after i made it and was picking up Russians and Superbowl, so I can hear things OK. I will test some more but I made it under the infulence of the flu  ..............so I made it connected it to the radio and have not felt upto playing with it since!

I Hope to mount it high and test it fully once I feel better

Let us know what you get and your results

If you have the space, and can get it up high. I can recommend the Sirio Vector 4000. You tune it to 11M and off you go. I'm e gets solid reports from across the pond and all of Europe and my QTH is low too

the T2LT is nothing more than an emergency antenna and i doubt would be very good at all..
after all it's just coax basicly a centre fed dipole with a choke to stop feedline radiation..
similar to a gain master which is a centre fed dipole,
the original 102" up and 102" down is known as a 1/2 wave centre fed,
the gain master is a 5/8th centre fed,
the way the gain master works is it's needs a lot more matching to work where a simple 1/2 wave centre fed doesn't..

the coil on the gain master is just a current mode choke or RF choke, or Ugly balun what ever you want to call it to stop the coax radiating, the T2LT is the same as a gain master but a 1/2 wave centre fed, would work exactly the same as a 102" up and down dipole..

in the real world any antenna 827, tornado, 1/2 wave silver rod type would have a 'mirror'
so that 16ft half wave would have another 16ft as a ground plane or mirror but that would make the antenna way to big and impractical to build and use, so they are DC shorted and use matching inductors (the loading coil) to help with matching. doing away with the extra 'mirror image'

i'd love to build a true centre fed full wave and see how well it works, but that'll be around 35ft in total length and need to be a good 17ft off the ground to work right..

Sorry to excavate an old thread but I'm planning to build a T2LT. I aim to go portable with a Thunderpole TX on foot and bike so I need something that rolls up and goes in a bag. I'd like to ultimately build a delta loop but will start with a T2LT to get my hand in.

I'm thinking 20 metres of RG58, a 68mm pipe as the former and a BNC plug. 8-9 metres would make the antenna and choke with the rest as feedline. This shouldn't be too lossy. Am I on the right track or is there anything I'm missing?

You're better off building a 5/8wave gainmaster. It's really not hard at all.

If you mean something like this...

...not an option. I need to be able to carry everything in a rucksack or pannier bag.

I'm just getting back into this after a long time. I made a wire loft dipole back in the mists of time so I'm starting with baby steps. I just want something simple that will go on a 6m pole for the moment. Within those parameters, do I have enough with 20m of RG58, a BNC connector, a choke former, SWR meter, a soldering iron and wire strippers?

Sounds like the perfect basis for a 2-el horizontal beam.

My buddy built his, used the measurements provided in the youtube video by "Mower Junkie" titled
'' My Best Homemade CB Antenna Ever!! ''

My buddy built it and placed it atop a 5 meter pole and has had incredible performance with only 200w pep talked literally all over the world map, from his home in NorCali - to Russia, Asia, Europe & Australia on it, made from Tv antenna aluminium!

I hope I hear yours on the band!
