You make last year sound like such a long time ago! It was just last month and, as it's a standing arrangement, there's not necessarily always something worthy of posting every month.

Personally, I was out that Sunday with no opportunity to use the radio although I did have a handset with me just in case!

Maybe we need to up the frequency (time not radio) of this regular sked. Here in Aylesbury we have a 'parrot' repeater on the 70MHz (4m) amateur band and the sked for that is every Tuesday at 8PM and there are many other similar weekly skeds on various bands.

The good thing about the 8/8/8(/8)* sked on PMR446 though is that the 8th will cycle around the different days of the week giving more people a chance to take part who might otherwise have commitments on a particular day of the week.

*8th day of the month, 8PM, channel 8, (optionally 8 CTCSS)

ok... sounds silly but is there an etiquette to calling out.. or do we just shout hello in the hope of a response lol...
had my set running a couple of weeks now and other than folk who all seem to know each other already.. so they just chat on the channel they always use...

also is ch. 8 the unofficial calling channel...

just wandered...( as you do)

did hear a chap last week shouting out on ch.5 saying he was so high and checking for distance... but i couldnt get back...

ah well...

Hi Ian

The talk around the internet forums is that Ch8 is recognised as the unofficial calling channel. There is still no agreement if that's no tone or tone 8 (88.5Hz). What I have done is programmed an additional extra channel 8 with tone 8 and allocated as Ch9 for convenience(sp?).

As for calling watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzlDAkYh8gc

Best wishes

Hi Dave

Channel 8, I think is normally considered the DX channel but of course it depends upon your local situation.

I have a local care home using channel 8 and tone 8 gets rid of them, but the problem is then further confused if you complete the legal external antenna mod, gets you out further obviously but also brings in more unwanted stuff.

Have a look at this thread though its interesting:
