Just a bit of advice to anybody thinking of buying the above radios - or, if you're currently faffing about with setting memories, then realising that you'll have to re-do them into the 2nd VFO as well - there is some saviour! I've been using the G4HFQ programming software for just over 2yrs. You are giving a table (that resembles a spreadsheet) and you simply fill in the frequencies and select various drop-down items (like CTCSS, power level etc) - then write them to the radio. Very simple.
You can enter in all your favourite frequencies, channels and repeaters - then sort by frequency (or memory name), save the settings (you can share them with other users) and add to them as you find new frequencies.
There are various software versions for each Yaesu rig, but the cable works on several and contains an in-built level convertor - a simple straight-through cable won't work!

Re: FT-8800E / FT-8900R G4HFQ Software
I bought this software for my ft-8800 and it works very well. Sadly there is no free alternative.

I'll also second that. The G4HFQ software is worth the money. The programs are only £10 each if you pay by cash, cheque or postal order so I think the price is reasonable. Certainly saves hours of work and it gets the job done

Re: FT-8800E / FT-8900R G4HFQ Software
Hi
Yeah, I definately recommend the software and the zlp cables, work first time every time for relatively few pounds.
I also like the fact that you can do all your work in excel, save it as a CSV file and just import it into the FTB8900 program, upload and bobs your uncle...
