Superstar 360 FM - LED channel indicator problems

Post by rooth »

Hello everyone !
I have a Superstar 360 FM radio and it has a problem with the LED channel display. Some lines do not light up. I tried to do cold soldering, but to no avail.

I tested the display separately, all the lines work . This is channel 22 .
Can some one help me with an idea ?

Dirty contacts inside switch. Put it out, use some contact cleaner fluid pushed inside, make a few turns, pray it is dirt, not contact wear ;)

Strip down the channel selector and clean each individual segment. There are about 5 or 6 in total. Also , carefully bend back and scrape the ends of the small metal contact strips (you'll see them once you dismantle it). Just make sure you note down the order that you remove each section as you'll need to reassemble it in the reverse order. Once you've done it then it'll work like new. They collect a lot of dirt over 40 years.

Either bad soldering joints or as Chris said, maybe dodgy switch. Does wiggling/jiggling/putting sideways pressure on the knob get them to reappear at all?

I've only ever messed with one Cobra display when I changed my own from red to an orange one. My soldering skills (or rather the lack of them) meant I had a couple of lines out until I went back over the joints with the iron again. I'd picked up some naff lead-free solder I had free with a new iron instead of the proper lead/tin stuff and it was rubbish.

I cleaned the switch. He wasn't from there. I changed the LED display and it works perfectly. :D

Probably just a dodgy wired connection then if the other one worked when tested but didn't when soldered in place. Regardless, glad you got it sorted :)
