Interesting this (the part about whats under the sticker). The last radio I bought was a Cobra 148, Taiwan R.O.C in pretty decent shape. Better than I first expected. Little worn here and there and needed cleaning outside, but sounds great on the air and the receiver.. omg.. for some reason it reminds me of the Madison.. Not tested much on the SSB yet,but AM sounds amazing. If am not mistaken, the radio is older than me...
I`ve never had a Superstar/Dirland 3900 though.. or 148 GTL I guess.. Only a Superstar 360FM and that recent Cobra 148 .. So let us know how it sounds Simon...I need to get one of those I suppose.

I got a new power supply
Linear power supply, with overvoltage protection (crowbar factory set at 15V).
Microset PT110A. Made in Italy, with love
Got it from WiMo in Germany. Ordered Monday night, here Friday Morning.
WiMo said the parcel tracking only worked in Germany, but ParcelForce picked up the tracking and I was able to track it all the way

The 3900 type radios work very similar to the 148/360FM Mk2.
The board is quite a close copy, especially in the earlier versions
They do tend to suffer more frequency drift as they warm up, but the older they are the better they tend to be.
The new ones can carry on drifting pretty much continually, and the component and PCB quality is often noticeably worse.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Nice to know. Because I do want one,and I always thought I wanted one from way back in time.. Taiwan R.O.C,and not the new China blue led (alarm-bell lights as I see it).. Did some get produced in Malaysia also? So is this the "Jackson"-story over again..; with Taiwan R.O.C = Good , Philipines = Still Good and R.P.C = Can be good sets, but the PCB is getting cheeper--- ? And to add.. the Channel selector is better on the older ones.. or am I way off here?Mudslinger wrote:harakiri wrote:Interesting this (the part about whats under the sticker). Anyway, thanks. I will still look for a decent old Superstar 3900 . and you confirmed my thoughts on staying away from those newer ones.. unless I got one extremely cheep though.. and had become desperate.

I don't think the Malysian ones are quite as good personally.
My Favorites ones are the Taiwanese made Dirland 3900E and the 3900 Black. Both of these can either be built in Taiwan or Malaysia, although I have seen a couple of 3900 Blacks which were chinese made (the front inlay on these is shiny)
People say that some of the CRT ones are not as good, I have only ever had two, and they were early CRT ones from around 1994 and they used the exact same board as the Dirland ones. The early CRT ones which IMO are ok are the red display versions without the frequency counter socket.
The prices of all 3900's have gone up quite a bit in recent months, but you should bag a decent one for under £80

So got this Connex at the turn of the year. Treated to a new bezel, meter inlay and faceplate.
