Iv'e got a rare mobile antenna :)

Post by ghost123uk »

Well actually I have 2 of them :o 8)

Worth mentioning that I used to own & run (and do EVERYTHING) the local electronics shop in Chester, and we had a big selection of new and used CB radio gear. The shop is now long gone, but I kept some bits, including 2 of these aerials (amongst some others) because I like them for a variety of reasons, (and I'm now using one again).

We all remember the DV27, ok-ish, cheap, broke easily on tree branches etc.
Then there was what most folk call a "DX27". A much heavier affair, very obviously helically wound. A good performer but needed a strong mount.
Now I say "what most folk call a "DX27", because really it's proper designation was a "DX25 5/8 wave" (you knew that didn't you  )

Now a much much rarer beast was the DX27 1/4 wave. Still had the DV style banjo at the base, but was what looked like a very simple fibre glass whip, about 1.5 Mtr in length, with a nice taper to it. Actually, inside it had a thin centre core of fibre glass which then had a (thin) even helical coil of wire all the way from top to bottom. The whole thing was then coated in a nice tapered layer of (glossy black) fibreglass. The end result was a nice looking aerial, that not only worked well but was very strong, with just enough "give" in it to survive big lorries on "A" roads going the other way at 70MPH without ripping the mount off. The taper also keeps it from rocking about too much of course. They also stay safe on modern (better magnets) mag bases of 7" and even 6" types.

Just thought I would mention all that :geek:

I'm thinking they were an early Sirio offering, were the original 70's DV27's Sirio?

Sirio make the current ones, the original were made by HMP and then Targa made them in around 1980-81.....my first antenna was a Targa DV27 in 1980. :D

I do have one, but I'm not planning on selling it any time soon ;)

I have now taken the DX27 1/4 wave off, only because, positioned fairly well back on the roof (as it has to be) it made the vehicle look like a Dodgem car  I Have now got a very minty genuine Valor Half Breed on. Seems to work better than I thought they did.

Just "missed out" on this twin loaded antenna on Ebay, only because I forgot to be at the computer when it ended. I think it's a Pama (note = "Pama" not "Parma") and iirc it was called a "Pama Twin Trucker". Again, an aerial I used to sell and one that I liked.

I've never seen a DX27 1/4 wave, but years ago I had a DX27 5/8..... It really was a cracking antenna. It had HMP on the banjo at the bottom.

It did me sterling service for about 6 months till some scroat nicked it....

I just checked, yes it does have HMP stamped on the banjo.

Can't believe what good nick they're in seeing as they are around 30 years old and been kicking around various sheds, and been used on & off during all that time = no signs of rust or any deterioration at all 8)

They are of course a "one cut" only design, but mine both tune well from CEPT C1 to UK C40 :)

That antenna was a Modulator Thunderbolt co-linear, or at least I think that was what they were called.

it is certainly a Modulator thunderbolt something.

If you look at the coil you see the radiowave pattern marks out LWM -Les wallen Manufacturing.

Good info Image

Pama (W. Manchester) did do a similar one that I was getting mixed up with.

So the rare aerial isn't quite so rare as most people have either had one or still have one. I part-exchanged mine for my original Tagra t40 aerial off a mate years back. The t40 was a shade down on performance but at least it could be used on the car at speed or if going a bit sideways. The double-coiled Modulator I had a week before that was even worse though as the magmounts at that time were only single ones, albeit 6". :)

Well DV 27 and DX 5/8 aren’t rare (at car boot sales etc), but the DX27 1/4 wave (smooth tapered f/glass whip, no visible coil, no tuning tip), is pretty darn rare I find (imho and all that ;) )

Is that the one where you can see the copper wire sticking out of the end of the fibreglass taper? The taper is about 4mm or so at the tip, about 10-12mm at the bottom and the whole thing is about 6 1/2ft long including the chrome mount at the bottom? Looks a bit like a kids fishing rod without the hoops? If so, I had one in about '92 in Birmingham as a temporary homebase twig until I got my A99/Antron up.

Edit: If I remember correctly it was black in colour but the paint was flaking off badly in places (it wasn't covered in pvc) and was a yellowy-white fibreglass underneath.

There's no pics of one on Google images (rare) so when I get back I'll take a couple, including measurements, and post them here.

But I ain't doing radiation pattern tests ;)
