UBC 355CLT thoughts?
Hi everyone
I was thinking of getting one of these and attempting to fit it with a disc tap for digital transmissions. However I've put that on hold as I have read about using a dongle instead for that. But now I look into it more I still wonder whether I should get this for my car or even at home. I already have a UBC360 for home use and a 92XLT for mobile walking about. My last main scanner I use is a UBC125XLT for other uses. Any ideas on whether it would be worth purchasing one or not?
Thanks everyone in advance

I have one that's sole purpose is mobile use, they're a very small set, user friendly for mobile (once you get used to it), CloseCall, and as cheap as chips, mine was about £70 brand new over 12 months ago.
Bang-for-buck they're a great little set.

Re: UBC 355CLT thoughts?
I find that it works much better to use a dongle, personally. I used to use a uniden scanner that I put a discriminator tap on myself, but then when I got the SDR dongle to work, it's just so much easier to find signals with that.
Have a look on my youtube channel, I have videos about how to set it up, if you're interested.

If you just want it for the discriminator tap, I would say don't bother and just use an RTL SDR instead.

Thanks, I ended up getting the RTL Friday and stumbled across your videos actually which helped me a lot with SDR sharp. Slight problem with the voice being unreadable when its decoded but im hoping to test that with my digital radio (Hytera PD365) from work later tomorrow.

Glad they helped. Try messing with the filter settings and double check that filter audio is not ticked. I usually use 8000Hz for DMR. Also try listening in analog too, maybe the signal strength is just too bad.scanningleicester wrote:Thanks, I ended up getting the RTL Friday and stumbled across your videos actually which helped me a lot with SDR sharp. A dongle isn't much use mobile, the 355 has a lot of stated uses, but it's a good mobile set.

For a car, the options are more likely to be down to an all in one unit that can deal with digital without a laptop hanging off it.
AOR DV-1 looks like the kind of thing that could be promising, but at a significant cost.
Uniden BCD536HP would be a more realistically priced alternative, although its firmware doesn't as yet support UK digital modes, and there is no word that they ever will - Although in theory, a bit of firmware should do the job.
The 536 would be a very competent analogue mobile scanner however. 355 looks very "vintage" by comparison.
